Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) CSR Policy

TNPL, as a responsible corporate citizen, has ingrained the philosophy of Corporate Social Responsibility deeply into its value system. The company is consistently taking up various community welfare initiatives for the benefit of the people living in  neighbouring villages. TNPL’s CSR activity mainly covers Punjai Pugalur, Kagitha Aalai, Punjai Thottakkurichi, Punnam, Vettamangalam, Nanjai Pugalur, Thirukkaduthurai and Kombupalayam Panchayat areas situated around TNPL factory premises. In addition to the above, need based activities are also be carried out in peripheral areas, which can be the locations in other districts within Tamil Nadu.

TNPL’s CSR policy aims to promote Economic, Social, Environmental and Cultural growth of the community at large in an equitable and sustainable manner.  The Company’s goal is to protect and nourish the interests of all its stakeholders and contribute to sustainable development. Ethics, Values and Transparency will underpin all its interactions within the community in which it operates. All its activities to sub serve social aspirations and the Nation’s needs and it will be carried out with integrity, honesty, dignity and decorum.

As per the TNPL’s CSR policy, CSR budget for the year 2012-2013 covers major heads viz., Education Sector, Health Sector, Infrastructure, Economic Sector, Environment Sector, Culture and Heritage Sector. During last financial year (2011-2012), TNPL has earned Rs.108.94 crores annual profit after tax.  3% of the total annual profit after tax comes to Rs.3.27 crores. Accordingly, an amount of Rs.3.27 crores has been earmarked for various CSR activities for the year 2012-13.

 

TNPL’s CSR activities cover different sectors such as, Improvement of drinking water system, Education, Medical and Public Health, Construction of Drainage walls, Road development and street lights, Environment and Agriculture, Career Development, Live stock and Cattle care, Development of Sports activities, Promotion of Tamil Literature, Art & Culture, Assistance for the Differently abled and Other Community Welfare Activities, etc.,

 
1. Education
A modern school, accredited with Five Star Status by Bharathidasan University, Trichy, providing educational facilities upto 12th Standard, is functioning in the township catering to the educational needs of the children of employees and children from the neighbourhood. The school provides opportunities to children to excel in studies and extra curricular activities.  Every year, the company spends about Rs.1 crore in providing education to nearly 2,200 students.
TNPL school has the distinction of turning out toppers at District level year after year.  In 2010-2011, one of the students from TNPL school secured first in Karur District level in 10th standard public examination.  District and School toppers from TNPL School are rewarded with Rs.50,000/- and Rs.20,000/- respectively.  This amount is being given from TNPL Arakkodai Trust funds in the form of fixed deposit receipts in the respective student’s name with their parent as guardian.
Every year, TNPL provides free education to 5 children belonging to economically weaker section to pursue their education in TNPL School. TNPL also supports augmentation of educational facilities in various Government schools in neighbouring villages, through supply of note books and giving financial assistance to meritorious children, building additional class rooms, providing furniture, etc. The company has also provided computers to a number of schools. Students of Government High Schools and Higher Secondary Schools securing first 3 ranks in the school in X & XII standard are awarded special prizes to motivate them.
Besides, five (5) students are sponsored from villages situated around the factory premises for Diploma Course in Paper Technology conducted by Seshasayee Institute of Technology (S.I.T), Trichy. 
A sum of Rs.1 lakh has been given to Government Arts College, Karur, to award students securing 1st, 2nd and 3rd ranks in University Examinations by setting up an Endowment.
During every academic year, between the months of November and March, TNPL is organizing special coaching classes for subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science for 10th standard and English, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Economics, Commerce and Accountancy for 12th standard students with a view to encourage slow learning students in Government Schools who are appearing for 10th and 12th standard public examinations.
During the year 2011-2012, TNPL has distributed notebooks worth of Rs.9.39 lakhs at free of cost to the poor children of Sri Lankan Tamils, who are residing in Refugee camps in Tamil Nadu through Office of Commissionerate of Rehabilitation and Welfare of Non-resident Tamils, Chepauk, Chennai.
In the years of 2009, 2010 and 2011, TNPL distributed free notebooks to children studying in govt. Schools located in the surrounding area of Mill premises. Notebooks were distributed in the presence of Local panchayat representatives and Headmasters / Headmistress of the respective schools.  This scheme covered 6,000 students from   44 Government Schools consisting of 32 Primary Schools, 7 Middle Schools, 1 High School and 4 Higher Secondary Schools.  To implement this scheme TNPL was spending  Rs. 7 lakhs approximately per year.
TNPL has taken several steps to promote sports amongst the youngsters of the area.  District and State level athletic championships are hosted by the company. Youngsters from neighbouring villages are trained in various athletic disciplines under the supervision of coaches.  Many of these athletes have won medals at the State level.
The company has been conducting Volleyball, Football and Kabaddi tournaments to encourage rural sports.   Company has instituted Rolling Shields to conduct these events every year.  Besides, in 2007-08, an amount of Rs.10 lakh was given to the District Administration, Karur, for construction of Sports Complex in Karur.
Recognizing the fact that today’s youth are the future of India, TNPL conducts “TALENT-EXPO” a platform to the students from rural and semi urban areas to exhibit their multifarious talents. In ‘TALENT EXPO 2011’, over 900 students from 49 schools participated in 18 competitions.
2. Health
TNPL regularly organizes Medical Camps in the neighbouring villages, through its Medical Officers and Para-Medical Staff.  Medical personnel of the Government Primary Health Centre also joins the team.  Patients are screened for ailments and medicine is distributed free of cost for minor ailments.  For major illnesses, financial assistance is given to the individuals. Pamphlets on general health and hygiene are circulated amongst employees and the neighbourhood population.  Once in 6 months, Blood donation camp is jointly organized by TNPL and the Blood Bank of the District Govt. Hospital, Karur on a regular basis. 
Eye camp for students studying in the neighbouring Govt. Schools was organized in January, 2011.  In the first phase, Teachers were given training by Doctors from Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai.  The training enabled the teachers to identify school children requiring treatment.  Based on the screening, 275 students were examined by eye specialists from Aravind Eye Hospital, and spectacles were given to 83 students free of cost.
During 2011, TNPL has organized a free special medical camp in association with Department of Health and Medicine, Government of Tamil Nadu, Karur District for the benefit of villagers living in the surrounding Panchayats and Town Panchayats.  A team of 14 Doctors from various fields along with 34 para-medical staff gave treatment to 511 persons consisting of 246 men, 232 women and 33 children in the special medical camp.
3. Infrastructure
TNPL has been contributing its resources liberally towards the improvement of infrastructure in the neighbouring areas. The company has constructed drains and retaining walls in the TNPL Effluent Water Lift Irrigation Society (TEWLIS) ayacut area.
Besides, several road improvement works have been done and public toilets constructed, which includes Dhobhi khana at Pazhamapuram village of Punnam village panchayat area at a cost of Rs.1.75 lakhs, Public Toilets in the villages of Govindhampalayam, Gandhi Nagar, Nadunanaparappu, Moonoottupalayam, Malayamapalayam, and Sengal Malai area at a cost of Rs.24 lakhs and a Compound wall to Veterinary Hospital, Velayuthampalayam of P.Pugalur Town panchayat area  at a cost of Rs.1.81 lakhs.   These works were executed during the financial years of 2009-2011.
During the year 2010-2011, 50 cents of TNPL’s land was donated to Tamil Nadu Kagitha Aalai Town Panchyat to enable them to construct a Community Hall at Puthu Kurukkupalayam village of Karur District.
Every day, 3,00,000 litres of drinking water is supplied to residents in 7 neighbouring villages, viz;Pazhamapuram, Thathampalayam, Ponniyagoundanpudur, Pandipalayam, Moolimangalam, Velliyampalayam and Kariyampatti.  Water tanks have been constructed and pipelines have been laid by the company at a cost of Rs.35 lakh.
During the year 2009-2010, TNPL in association with Tamil Nadu Drinking Water and Drainage Board (TWAD) implemented comprehensive drinking water supply scheme for the neighborhood areas of TNPL by contributing an amount of Rs.96.76 lakhs covering 7 panchayats areas viz;Punjai Thottakurichi, Punjai Pugalur, Tamil Nadu Kagitha Aalai Town Panchayats and Thirukaduthurai, Punnam, Vettamangalam, Attur Poolampalayam areas in Karur District.
Besides, the company has provided financial assistance to the tune of Rs.29 lakh to Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board and other local bodies to augment supply of drinking water to the people.
4. Economic Development 
It has been TNPL’s endeavour to provide various kinds of vocational training to the rural youth of the area.  Accordingly, a Computer Training Centre has been set up to provide computer literacy to unemployed youth from the neighbouring villages. Based on aptitude, Advanced Training in computers is imparted to make the youth employable.
A Soft Skill Development Center has been set up which conducts Typewriting classes both in English and Tamil for unemployed youth from the villages.  On completion of Training, the trainees appear for the public examination conducted by the State Government for different levels of proficiency in Typewriting. Training in sewing, apparel making and bee keeping is imparted to women from neighbouring villages to improve their employability and their economic status.
During the year 2011-12, with a view to improve the standard of the Libraries, library books were purchased and donated to  Government branch libraries and 5 rural libraries situated in the 8 neighbouring villages. 
During the year 2010-2011, as a rehabilitation measure of the differently abled persons, 54 differently abled persons residing at Karur District were provided with aids & appliances worth of Rs.3 lakhs which include artificial limbs, leg, motorized tricycle etc.
Youth from the neighbourhood are given intensive coaching to    prepare them to appear in competitive examinations conducted by State/Central Government.  In view of imparting coaching of TNPL, in the year 2010, 10 candidates of different Villages were selected for appointment as Sub-Inspector and 32 as Constables in the Tamil Nadu Police Department. 
In order to develop skilled workforce in technical trades like Fitter, Welder, Instrument Technician etc around the surrounding areas, it has been decided to set up an Industrial Training Centre (ITC) by the company at its premises.  For this purpose, Rs.2.90 crores is allocated for creating infrastructure and other basic amenities for the proposed Industrial Training Centre and 76 students will be benefited every year. The recurring expenditure will be met through TNPL’s CSR Budget.
Livestock and Cattle Care Camps are held in neighbouring villages once in 2 months.  Medical and Para-medical staff from Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Tamil Nadu Govt. provide the specialist support.  TNPL sponsors the event by meeting all the expenditure incurred for the camp.  Medicines for cattle are provided and the camps have received tremendous response and support. So far, 13 camps were conducted benefiting thousands of cattle.
Mobile cattle vaccination camps are held in co-ordination with Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Training and Research Institute, Karur to cover villages falling in surrounding areas of TNPL.
5. Environment

By way of increasing the area under green cover, 50,000 saplings of Neem, Vagai, Rain tree, Bamboo etc., were planted in the Panchayat / Villages viz; Vettamangalam, Kuppam, Pavithram, Punjai Thottakurichi, Punjai Pugalur, Thirukkaduthurai,  Nanjai Pugalur and  Manmangalam on a single day (31st October, 2008).  An amount of Rs.20 lakhs had been spent for this purpose.  Again during February 2011, 50,000  shadow giving saplings were planted between Karur and Coimbatore National Highways in co-ordination with Public Works Department, Karur District at a cost of Rs.12.37 lakhs.

During the year 2010-2011, to improve the soil quality of farm lands, gypsum worth of Rs.7 lakhs was given to Farmers of neighboring villages.

Raising of tree saplings at dye affected land at Kalingarayan channel ayacut area, Erode District, Kathankanni village in Tiurpur District and Noyyal river basin at Karur District has been taken up by TNPL at a cost of Rs.21 lakhs.

6. Culture & Heritage
By way of promoting Rural Art and Culture, cultural programmes by traditional folklore artistes are held.  Needy artistes are given financial assistance.  Debates and symposium in Tamil are held regularly.   Local artistes are provided assistance to promote Rural Art and Culture.  ‘Thai’ Pongal and Tamil New Year day were celebrated with enthusiasm and gaiety at TNPL Stadium with a view to promote the Art and Culture of the region.
7. Other Community Welfare Activities
Farmers’ meet is being conducted regularly to train the farmers in scientific methods of cultivation and recent trends in farming.  The company, through a tie-up with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore (TNAU), carries out periodic study of the soil conditions and trains the farmers to get better yield.  The farmers are also taken on tour to other states / towns to acquire first-hand knowledge of the improved farming techniques adopted in these places. 
During monsoon, the company chips in with its contribution by cleaning weeds, debris, etc., and provide appropriate relief measures.  As a welfare measure, gypsum is given to the farmers to improve the soil quality of their lands.
